Flannel Friday: Community Helpers

We just did Community Helpers storytime, so I have a flannel plus a bonus activity that the kids LOVE.

I was inspired by Sarah at Read, Sarah, Read! to flannelize Trashy Town by Andrea Zimmerman. We have these fabulous Community Helper puppets that make it extra fun.

We start with Mr. Gilly (the farmer) who puts on his work gloves and starts driving his empty truck.

We all drive along stopping for trash along the way. After each stop, we say, "Dump it in, smash it down, drive around the Trashy Town!" Posting the words really helps get more of the parents involved.

Finally the truck is full, and Mr. Gilly heads home for a bath!

Look at these adorable firefighters! I made the original set by copying a coloring page onto red paper. A very talented coworker made these on foam. Can you see the detail? Each one has his own unique face. She added the numbers one through five, and the reflective stripes on their jackets is duct tape. Velcro on their hands lets us wrap them around the pole.

The pieces are for the rhyme "Five Brave Firefighters". When the bell rings, one slides down. This one always gets a big reaction. See the rhyme and a great craft to go with it here.

I am hosting the round-up this week. See all the great ideas here. Check out Flannel Friday on Pinterest. Find out everything you ever wanted to know about Flannel Friday on the blog. Have fun!
